Privacy Policy

Last updated July 26, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains what information CaseTree collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. It applies whenever you use CaseTree, whether signed in or as a guest.

1. Information we collect

Account information. Handled by our authentication provider, Clerk: your email address and, if you sign in with Google, LinkedIn, or Microsoft, your name and avatar from that provider. We never see or store your password.

Case and tree data. The case prompts you submit (typed or from an uploaded PDF), the AI-generated issue trees, coaching scores, and Practice Mode answers/feedback tied to your saved trees.

Forum content. Posts, comments, and likes you make on Case Garden.

Practice-partner profile. Only if you opt in to Find a Case Partner: a display name, timezone, experience level, and target firms/roles, which other opted-in users can see.

Payment information. If you subscribe to Eden, our payment processor, Stripe, collects your card details directly — we never receive or store full card numbers, only your subscription status and billing history.

Usage data.How many trees you've generated (to enforce plan limits), basic device/browser information, and preferences you set in Settings (theme, default detail level, notification and privacy toggles).

2. AI processing of your case content

When you generate a tree, request follow-up questions, or use Practice Mode, the relevant case text and tree content is sent to our AI provider (DeepSeek) to produce the response. Avoid including personal or confidential information you wouldn't want processed by a third-party AI model in your case prompts.

3. How we use your information

  • To provide the service — generating trees, coaching, and Practice Mode content;
  • To operate Case Garden and Find a Case Partner, including showing your forum activity or partner profile to other users where applicable;
  • To process payments and manage your Eden subscription;
  • To enforce plan limits and prevent abuse;
  • To send account-related communications; marketing/product-tip emails only if you've opted in under Settings → Notifications.

4. Who we share information with

We share information with the service providers that run CaseTree on our behalf:

  • Clerk — authentication and account management;
  • Stripe — subscription billing and payment processing;
  • Neon — our database host, which stores your account, tree, and forum data;
  • Vercel — application hosting and infrastructure;
  • DeepSeek — the AI model that generates trees, coaching, and Practice Mode content from the case text you submit.

If you opt in to partner matching, your display name, timezone, experience level, and target firms are visible to other opted-in users. We don't sell your personal information, and we only share it beyond the above with your consent, to comply with the law, or to protect the rights and safety of CaseTree and its users.

5. Cookies and local storage

We use a small number of cookies and browser local-storage entries: a session cookie from Clerk to keep you signed in, an anonymous identifier for guests so daily generation limits can be enforced without an account, your theme preference, and whether you've dismissed the tutorial or the Instagram follow prompt. We don't use third-party advertising trackers.

6. Data retention

We keep your account, tree, and forum data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account from Settings → Account, your trees, forum posts, comments, and partner-matching history are permanently deleted; some records may be retained briefly where required for billing, fraud prevention, or legal compliance.

7. Your choices and rights

Most of your privacy controls are self-serve, in Settings:

  • Turn individual email notifications on or off (Settings → Notifications);
  • Turn your partner-matching visibility on or off, and choose your forum display-name preference (Settings → Privacy);
  • Edit or remove your practice-partner profile details (Settings → Practice Partners);
  • Manage or cancel your Eden subscription (Settings → Subscription);
  • Permanently delete your account and associated data (Settings → Account).

Depending on where you live, you may also have rights to access, correct, or export your personal information beyond what's available in Settings. Contact us at info@casetree.net to make a request.

8. Children's privacy

CaseTree isn't directed at children under 16, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we'll remove it.

9. International users

CaseTree is hosted and processed on infrastructure that may be located outside your country of residence. By using the service, you understand your information may be transferred to and processed in other countries, which may have different data protection laws than your own.

10. Security

We rely on our service providers' security practices (encryption in transit, access controls) to protect your information, and we never store full payment card numbers or your account password ourselves. No system is completely secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll update the date above.
